Relax… It’s Just Sex

Starring: Jennifer Tilly, Paul Winfield, Seymour Cassel, Cynda Williams and Lori Petty
110 minutes, released in 1998, rated R
Directed by P.J. Castellaneta

The film opens with two males having very enthusiastic sex and then almost immediately segues into a young man pontificating on whether to swallow or not to swallow. I leave the “what” to your imagination.

This pretty much sets the stage of light hearted comedy & laughter for the next half hour of this flick. Tara Ricotto (Tilly) has an eclectic mix of 20’s something friends: gay, straight, & bi-sexual, who are in various stages of accepting themselves and dealing with their issues of love, sex, society, health, miscarriage, childbirth, and separation, until one gay couple is attacked in a gay bashing incident. How the friends respond to the violence vary within the circle as humor gives way to sobriety.

What I liked about this film:

When one of the women, who is pregnant, loses her baby at 7 months, I thought her friends showed a lot of emotional support and caring, which was nice to see. For that reason, it was gently entertaining.

What I didn’t like about it:

It was pretty ordinary as far as drama goes. If you’ve watched “Friends” on TV, you’ve seen it all. This ranks as a more risqué gay version of that show.
