Chiropractic and Children

by Sharon Bruce, D. C.

The benefits of chiropractic for adult problems are well known. However, most fail to recognize the potential benefits that children and adolescents can gain from chiropractic care. Studies have suggested that chiropractic care may be a normal management option for children suffering from such common conditions as headache, otitis media (middle ear infection), colic, nocturnal enuresis (bed wetting) and asthma.

Chiropractic InfantOne example of how chiropractic can help is otitis media or the middle ear infection. Otitis media’s suspected cause may be misalignments in the cervical spine (neck) that affect the function of the Eustachian tube in the middle ear. Manipulation, which can alleviate this vertebral misalignment and presumably improve function of the Eustachian tube to promote drainage, appears to be a rational treatment of otitis media. When looking at comparison data, the mean time required for otitis media resolution in a group of children receiving chiropractic care was less than half of the time needed for resolution in a group of children receiving antibiotics.

The techniques for manipulation on children are not “scaled down versions” of adult manipulative therapy. The treatments are designed specifically for children. In addition to manipulation, the pediatric patient may receive modalities, massage, or special treatments as appropriate for the management of each case.
